Filosofi Teras dan Upaya Menjadi Lebih Bahagia

Membaca buku ini di awal tahun 2022 ternyata adalah keputusan yang tepat untukku. Setelah menghadapi berbagai kejadian berat di tahun 2021, Filosofi Teras seakan menjadi tawaran untuk menjadi lebih Bahagia dan kuat dalam menghadapi tahun 2022. Setidaknya, aku jadi tahu beberapa tips untuk menghadapi hari-hari berat dan sulit.

Filosofi Teras intinya berisi tentang salah satu aliran filsafat yang sudah ada lebih dari 2000 tahun lalu di Yunani, yaitu Filsafat Stoa. Beberapa orang barangkali merasa asing dan berjarak dengan istilah filsafat. Seperti sesuatu yang berat. Tapi berbeda dengan filsafat stoa yang lebih mengutamakan hal-hal praktikal yang akan lebih terasa efeknya jika dipraktikkan daripada dipikirkan saja.

 

Mengapa Filosofi Teras?

Filsafat Stoa pertama kali dibawa oleh Zeno, seorang pedagang yang kapal serta muatan dagangannya karam dan dia harus terdampar di tempat yang asing baginya. Dengan tidak memiliki apa pun, Zeno harus bertahan hidup di tempat asing dan tidak satu orang pun yang dikenalinya. Siapa sangka, dari pengalaman buruk ini, lahir aliran pemikiran yang terus relevan dengan perkembangan zaman.

Stoa sendiri berarti sebuah pelataran di Zaman Yunani yang digunakan orang untuk berkumpul. Di tempat itulah Zeno dan orang-orang yang satu aliran dengannya berkumpul hingga akhirnya disebut dengan filsafat stoa. Orang-orang yang menganut aliran stoa ini disebut sebagai seorang stoic. Lalu Henry Manampiring menjadikan judul bukunya Filosofi Teras.

Berbeda dengan aliran filsafat lainnya yang lebih fokus pada pemikiran-pemikiran—yang terkadang membuatku kebingungan, jujur, filsafat stoa lebih memfokuskan pada praktik mengatasi emosi negatif yang muncul dalam diri. Ini juga alasan aliran filsafat ini bisa terus dipakai sampai sekarang dan tidak bertentangan dengan ajaran agama mana pun.

Cara untuk Lebih Berbahagia

Aku senang sekali pada penjelasan dikotomi kendali. Bahwa dalam hidup ini ada hal-hal yang datang dari luar diri dan tidak bisa kita kendalikan, seperti di mana dan kapan kita lahir, Kesehatan, kesuksesan, pendapat orang lain terhadap kita, sampai yang terakhir adalah kematian. Ada juga hal-hal yang bis akita kendalikan, yaitu yang datang dari dalam diri, seperti persepsi kita terhadap sesuatu, ucapan, dan tindakan kita.

Dengan kesadaran ini, aku yang biasanya selalu mempertanyakan, “Kenapa sih harus begini?” atau “Kenapa harus aku yang mengalami ini?” kini mulai berubah jadi, “Ini adalah hal yang gak bisa aku kendalikan. Gak apa-apa kalau begini.” Ini cukup membantuku menenangkan diri, meskipun belum sepenuhnya bisa aku praktikkan, tapi sedikit demi sedikit aku merasakan progresnya.

Hal sederhana yang aku rasakan, aku selalu cemas setiap kali menghadapi hari Senin. Tempat kerjaku benar-benar penuh dengan ketidakpastian. Siapa pun kalau tidak memenuhi ekspektasi bisa tiba-tiba harus pergi. Itu cukup membuatku kepikiran. Aku begitu takut tidak bisa memenuhi ekspektasi. Tapi setelah aku memahami konsep dikotomi kendali, aku bisa lebih tenang menghadapi hari Senin. Dan yang paling penting, aku bisa lebih siap menghadapi apa pun yang terjadi. Dengan ketenangan ini, aku jauh lebih fokus ketika bekerja dan menikmati hari-hari. Ketika rasa cemas itu datang, setidaknya aku bisa membuat kecemasan itu tidak menggangguku keesokan harinya. Cukup di waktu itu saja aku cemas, selanjutnya aku sudah mempersiapkan diri untuk segala kemungkinan yang akan terjadi.

Aku juga senang dengan definisi berbahagia dalam filsafat stoa. Bahagia adalah ketenangan batin yang didapatkan dari dalam diri. Bahagia bukan dari hal-hal eksternal, jadi bagaimana pun keadaan kita, kalau kita memiliki ketenangan batin ini, bisa saja kita tetap berbahagia. Ini didapatkan setelah kita benar-benar memahami prinsip dikotomi kendali dan hidup selaras dengan alam.

Filsafat Stoa dalam Segala Keadaan

Filosofi Teras nyatanya bisa digunakan dalam segala keadaan. Apalagi pada penjelasan dikotomi kendali, bahwa dalam hidup ini ada hal-hal yang bisa kita kendalikan, yaitu yang ada dari dalam diri kita, dan ada yang tidak bisa kita kendalikan, yaitu yang datang dari luar diri kita.

Ketika kesuksesan, kekayaan, atau prestasi sedang kita pegang, tentu harus diiringi dengan kesadaran bahwa semua itu bukanlah hal yang bisa kita kendalikan. Artinya, bisa pergi begitu saja sewaktu-waktu. Kalau kita sudah memahami ini, kita bisa sedikit berjarak dengan kesenangan itu, sehingga saat hilang, kita tidak merasa menderita karena sudah tahu hal ini akan terjadi.

Begitu pula sebaliknya, ketika kesedihan atau kegagalan sedang kita rasakan, harus diiringi dengan kesadaran bahwa itu bukanlah hal yang bisa kita kendalikan. Hal yang bisa kita kendalikan adalah persepsi terhadap segala yang datang dari luar.

Dalam buku ini juga dijelaskan mengenai suatu peristiwa sebagai fakta dan opini yang mengekorinnya kemudian. Suatu peristiwa pada dasarnya adalah hal yang objektif. Tapi ketika ditambahkan dengan opini atau interpretasi di belakangnya, peristiwa itu jadi terasa begitu subjektif. Suatu peristiwa adalah hal di luar kendali kita, sedangkan interpretasi adalah hal yang datang dari dalam diri kita. Jadi yang bisa kita lakukan adalah mengendalikan interpretasi kita.

 

Hal yang Kusuka dari Buku Ini

“Buku ini bisa menjadi pintu pembuka untuk kamu yang ingin mengenal lebih jauh mengenai filsafat stoa.” Begitu kira-kira ungkapan Henry Manampiring selaku penulisnya. Baru menyentuh pintunya saja, aku sudah menemukan banyak sekali manfaat dari filsafat stoa. Penulisnya berhasil membuat filsafat yang selalu terkesan berat dan memusingkan menjadi lebih ringan dan bersahabat. Dari pemilihan judul saja sudah membuatku ada keinginan untuk membacanya.

Meskipun ringan, tapi buku ini dikerjakan dengan tidak asal-asalan. Ini dibuktikan dengan adanya survey kekhawatiran nasional di bagian awal. Ada juga selipan-selipan wawancara dengan orang-orang tertentu. Beberapa hal bisa menjawab pertanyaan atau kecemasanku selama ini. Misalnya pada bagian yang membahas kematian. Jujur aku sangat takut pada kematian. Filosofi Teras menjelaskan bahwa kematian adalah peristiwa objektif. Interpretasi yang datang terhadap kematian itulah yang membuatku dan mungkin kebanyakan manusia takut pada kematian.

Filosofi Teras juga menyelipkan berbagai cerita mengenai orang-orang berbagai zaman yang menjadi stoic. Seperti Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Zeno, dan masih banyak lagi.

Aku menyadari masih terlalu dangkal kalau hanya membaca Filosofi Teras untuk memahami filsafat stoa. Tapi Filosofi Teras benar-benar bisa menjadi pintu masuk yang menyenangkan. Kuharap setelah ini semakin banyak bacaan-bacaan mengenai filsafat stoa karena aku yakin, Filosofi Teras yang tahun 2019 lalu  dipilih menjadi Book of The Year di Indonesia International Book Fair (IIBF) ini telah membuat banyak orang menjadi prokopton yang ingin mengenal lebih jauh lagi filsafat stoa.
